IMDD : Season 1, Episode 4: The Changeover

You'r sitting in a theater, munching your popcorn, sipping your soda, talking to your love on your phone, throwing away abuses as to how much the movie sucks and how much you really want to get out of there and at just that moment-you hear a slight disturbance, you hear people talking, its spreading like a wave, some chick is screaming and you are sitting there-like a fucking moron. You return your seat backs to the full upright position, you hang up the phone trying to figure out whats the matter. You ask the person next to you- he/she gives you a chuckle, and says- " You just missed the changeover, this one is THE best so far" and there you sit there wondering, because you'r a big fan of changeover, you like to be surprised, you see all the flashes on the screen, explaining everything and you sit there like an idiot, cursing yourself instead. So now you want to get out as you don't want someone to ruin the surprise for you, so in the end you end up where you started- at the beginning-ground zero.

Now let me explain to you folks as to what exactly is a changeover. It is a few seconds span where the movie goes on and nobody in the audience has any idea, they start to put pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle and when they get it, they are like-"Oh! my God". They are so goddamn surprised that its like in a flight you hear the words-" We have just lost cabin pressure". And that my friend is what we call a changeover which leads to the outcome-the twist, after you put those pieces back. So, the changeover gives birth to a baby twist. The stronger the changeover-the healthier is the twist.

Well we all love movies with "smart twists" in the end because technically when it comes to movies we all like to be fooled, its human nature, we need to keep ourselves updated about our own idiocracy. Thats one place where one doesn't feel cheated when fooled, they laugh about it.

So, smarter the changeover, smarter the twist- the harder the bitch-slap of idiocracy - the happier we are- bravo!

Adieus,

DD

I am waiting when you will be hired by a film magazine to write columns for them

It'll be great if you can pitch in a few of the masterpieces which have those oh-so-awesome changeovers which inspired you to write this post.
Personally am a big time fan of movies with intelligent twists in them but most of the time the twist isn't so twisty enough to give you a twist in the stomach, so would be great to have a few great ones recommended by ya :)
Oh and I found this post pretty helpful for the other eager ones out there (http://alltopmovies.com/twist-endings-in-movies/) <--- Big Time Spoiler Alert.

-Kalpana- I am a myself a big fan of smart changeovers.... as one of my friend here mentions... Saw 1 ... that was the major breakthough for me ...as you rightly said .. too many twists can be a bust... but too many twists if handled well can be very refreshing (example: The Prestige)... the changeovers are handled amazingly .. refreshing with the whole time line concept...

The list which you gave really had some good twist in the end movies... but I know among all those its Fight Club which gives various hints in between .. but we are so caught up in narrations that we never notice anything... thats the whole beauty of it .... its after one viewing after another that one notices things.. same for Sixth Sense (you need to take multiple viewings)...

These movies have one or many major sub plots .. and the focus is such that the audience gets so lost or bored in them that they are never able to spot any hints for the changeover thats supposed to happen...

I can remember a few ( i will not list the obvious, those that are mentioned in the list).. but i guess you must have seen them all

Saw- take entire series...
The Machinist
Stay
Mulholland dr.
Dial M for Murder
Crying Game-(excellent opening by Forest Whitaker)
The Shawshank Redemption
Magnolia
Eden lake-(its barbaric and awesome)
The Thirteenth Floor

there are a lot more .... i'll keep adding on ...n ..i'll keep you posted
